Can President's Oversea Experience Promote the Level of University Innovations

Abstract:Based on upper echelons theory,this paper manually collects oversea experience data of presidents in universities affiliated by ministry of education,and investigates the relationship between president's oversea experience and university innovation activities.We find that president's oversea experience and the length of president's oversea experience promote university innovations.Compared to single-country or single-category oversea experience,president's multiple-country or multiple-category oversea experience significantly increase the level of university innovations.Meanwhile,the effect of president's oversea experience on university innovations is more pronounced when president did not work in current university,president has previous working experience of other institutions,president has political connections or university is located in regions of high marketization.Overall,this research expands the existing literature of determinants of organizational innovation and of economic consequences of managerial oversea experience.By providing empirical evidence,this paper is beneficial for the evaluation of implementation effects of oversea brain gain policies,the recruitments and the heterogeneous effect of university presidents with oversea experience.
