The Difference in Residence and Settlement Intention and Its Influencing Factors Among Young Highly-Educated Floating Population

Abstract:Based on China Migrants Dynamic Survey,this study discusses the difference in residence and settlement intention among young highly-educated floating population.The findings are as follows.①The settlement intention shows a downward trend,while the residence intention shows an upward trend,and the gap between the two is widening.②The settlement intention of young highly-educated floating population is influenced by their ability to live in both urban and rural areas and their expectations of the local economy and welfare,while the residence intention of young highly-educated floating population is more closely related to individual characteristics,migration experiences,and subjective feelings.③Although the relaxation of the hukou restriction for cities with population of less than 3 million has had a certain positive impact on the settlement intension of young highly-educated floating population,they are more likely to settle in cities with high hukou threshold,such as major cities and super-large cities,driven by their expectations of the local economy and welfare.
