Abstract:Amidst growing global competition in science and technology,technological innovation is considered a crucial driving force behind the development of new quality productive forces.Focusing on the perspective of technological spatial evolution,this study analyses technological innovation in 237 cities at prefecture level and above in China over the period 2004—2022,makes a cross-sectional comparison of the technological complexity of different cities,reveals how it functions as a key factor in influencing innovation path dependence and investigates the impact of the innovation path dependence phenomenon on the development of regional innovation effectiveness.The study shows that technological innovation in the central and eastern regions of mainland China is gradually moving from a path-dependent mode to a path-breaking mode and that the eastern region has a higher degree of technological complexity.Increased regional technological complexity can help break the pattern of innovation path dependence,and factors such as rich educational resources,favorable R&D environment,and high economic level will synergize with higher technological complexity to accelerate the transformation of regional innovation from a path-dependent model to a breakthrough mode.Breaking the path of regional technological innovation can help to improve the innovation effectiveness of cities,while the expansion of industrial scale and foreign investment are crucial for the improvement of innovation effectiveness.
