Effects of Industrial Robots on the Productivity Heterogeneity of Chinese Provincial Manufacturing Industry

Abstract:Based on the data of manufacturing industry in China,this paper analyzes the influence of industrial robot application on the total factor productivity of manufacturing industry,and investigates its heterogeneity.The study shows that among 30 provinces/cities in China,the applications of industrial robots in 10 provinces/cities including Beijing,Tianjin,and other provinces in southern coastal,northern coastal and eastern coastal areas have the most significant effect on manufacturing productivity;those in 11 provinces/cities in the central and southwest areas have significant influence;the applications of industrial robots in 9 provinces/cities in northeast and northwest have no significant influence on the improvement of manufacturing productivity,and the regional heterogeneity is obvious.The reason is that most of the industrial robots in China are used in automobile and electronic information industry,the development direction and focus of provinces/cities are different that lead to the heterogeneity of effect;industrial robot applications need the support from the industrial chain and technical absorptive capacity,which is helpful to improve the productivity of manufacturing firms.
