The Influence of User-Related Characteristics on the Idea's Adoption in Virtual Innovation Community:An Empirical Study Based on the Dell's “IdeaStorm” Community

Abstract:Creativity is the starting point and basic conditions of product innovation.Previous studies mainly focus on the influence of user participation on innovation performance,whereas rarely on idea's adoption.This paper studies the effects of users' characteristics and the ideas' characteristics on the ideas' adoption in virtual innovation community.Simultaneously,it examines these influences empirically based on the random samples of 272 users and 730 ideas from Dell's “IdeaStorm” Community.Results show that:users' participation,users' prior contribution and ideas' popularity have a significant positive impact on the ideas' adoption,while idea length and supporting evidence have no impact on the ideas' adoption.These research conclusions may provide guidance for enterprises to mine valuable users and ideas based on user-related characteristics,and what's more,to improve the operation of innovation community.
