Is Multidimensional Market Competition a Force or a Resistance for High-Quality Innovation——Based on the Heckman Two-Stage Empirical Test of the Auto Industry

Abstract:Based on the design of multidimensional market competition and high and low quality innovation indexes by using the unique auto exhaust emission dataset,this paper uses Heckman two-stage models to empirically test the bidirectional effects of competition on innovation quality.The results show that the strong competition,including intra-market competition and inter-market competition,has a significant negative impact on high-quality innovation and becomes resistance to high-quality innovation.That is,the greater multidimensional market competition intensity enterprises face,the more likely they are to choose low-quality innovation and increase the corresponding innovation scale.On the contrary,when enterprises are faced with smaller intensity of multidimensional market competition,it is helpful to promote high-quality innovation decisions and increase the corresponding innovation scale.Further analysis shows that strategic positioning plays different moderating effects,that is,the promotion effect of strong competition on low-quality innovation is strengthened in enterprises whose strategic positioning is cost leadership,while weak competition has a more obvious effect on promoting high-quality innovation in enterprises with differentiation strategic positioning.
