Business Model Innovation Path from the Multi-Level Perspective——An Empirical Study of China's New Energy Vehicle Industry

Abstract:In order to understand the path of business model innovation clearly,the article takes the multi-level perspective (MLP)from the theory of socio-technical system transformation as the basic analysis frame.On the basis of the three-layer framework of the landscape,regime and technological niche,this article adds the business model as the fourth layer,constructs a business model innovation path model from the multi-level perspective,and then uses it to analyze five typical business model innovation paths.Finally,this article takes China's new energy vehicle industry as an example,conducts case studies on five paths,and analyzes the evolution of business model innovation paths and influencing factors.The results show that:①Through the mutual effect of the landscape,regime and technological niche,there are five innovation paths for business models including expansion,replication,integration,imitation and substitution.②According to the trend of the five paths,the dependence of business model innovation on the regime is weakening,but the technological nich-driven turns strong.New technological changes may promote subversive business model innovation.③The evolutionary characteristics of external factors are as follows:the landscape is an uncertain element,the regime adopts dynamic strategies of “symbiosis-competition-symbiosis”and the technological niche spirals from immature to mature,and then to immature.
