The Upgrade Path of Enterprise Innovation Ecosystem from the Perspective of Technological Catch-up ——The Case of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC)

Abstract:Under the background of rapid development of high-tech,the integrated circuit (IC)has become a strategic battleground in high-tech competition among countries around the world,and actively promoting the construction of innovation ecosystem has become an important way for Chinese integrated circuit enterprise to achieve technological catch-up and even surpassing.Using a longitudinal single case study approach,this paper analyzes the development process of SMIC's innovation ecosystem and explores how SMIC builds an innovation ecosystem upgrade path under the perspective of technological catch-up.The study shows the followings.①Driven by technological catch-up,SMIC's innovation ecosystem has gone through three stages of development:pioneering network laying period,expanding network weaving period and disruptive network integrating period.②In response to the strategic needs and goals of breakthrough in bottleneck technology and rising global industrial chain position,the innovation ecosystem upgrade path is built based on key core technology breakthrough,embedded global industry chain reconstruction,and interactive value network synergy.③The essence of the process of continuous upgrading of the enterprise innovation ecosystem is the process of grasping the window of opportunity of technology,market and system,constantly accumulating technological innovation ability,resource coordination ability and value creation ability,and achieving technological catch-up and even surpassing goals.This study provides decision-making references for promoting the construction and upgradation of the innovation ecosystem of integrated circuit enterprise,in order to achieve technological catch-up and leapfrog development.
