The Impact of the Tenure Track System Reform on Faculty Research Performance from the Perspective of Technological Innovation

Abstract:Based on a panel data from 240 mathematics and physics faculty members at a research university between 2000 to 2021,a regression analysis using a multidimensional fixed-effects model was conducted to investigate the impact of the implementation of the tenure track system on faculty research performance.The study found that the implementation of the tenure-track system had a significant positive effect on the research performance of faculty in mathematical disciplines,and an even stronger positive effect on the research performance of faculty in physics disciplines.There was a significant positive correlation between job title and faculty research performance,and faculty members holding senior titles demonstrating significantly higher research output than those with associate or below titles.In contrast,age did not show any noticeable differences in its impact on research productivity.Faculty members under the tenure-track system overall outperformed those outside the system in terms of the number of national research projects and talent programs they led.In view of this,it is recommended to promote the effective and reasonable implementation of the tenure track system in universities by creating a benign ecology for the implementation of tenure-track system,establishing scientific evaluation and promotion criteria and improving relevant supporting measures,so as to effectively promote the cultivation of academic talents.
