How to Drive Disruptive Technology Innovation for Equipment Manufacturing Enterprises ——Configuration Analysis Based on Environment-Strategy-Structure Contingency Theory

Abstract:As an important way for Chinese equipment manufacturing industry to realize transformation and upgrading,how to carry out disruptive technology innovation for equipment manufacturing enterprises has been an urgent problem.Based on environment-strategy-structure contingency theory,this paper took 20 representative listed equipment manufacturing enterprises in China as samples and used fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to explore the causal complex relationships between environmental,strategic and structural factors and disruptive technology innovation of equipment manufacturing enterprises.It is found that:①Environmental dynamism,government innovation support,market orientation,technology orientation and the establishment of independent organizations are not necessary conditions for disruptive technology innovation.②There are three ways to promote disruptive technology innovation named as Market-Driven,Technology-Driven and Collaboration of Government and Enterprise.There are two situations that inhibit disruptive technology innovation named as Being Content with the Status Quo and Scarcity of Environmental Resources.③In the relevant configurations,there are substitute relationships among environmental dynamism,government innovation support and technology orientation.This paper is helpful to deepen the understanding of disruptive technology innovation and provides theoretical basis and path guidance to carry out disruptive technology innovation activities for equipment manufacturing enterprises.
