Abstract:Firstly, the paper analyses the spatial pattern of R&D expenditure during 1997—2009 in countries and regions worldwide through spatial clustering analysis. Then, it measures the evolution of R&D expenditure by fragmentation index, evenness index and agglomeration index all over the world. Finally, the paper probes into the temporal evolution and spatial variation of R&D intensity. The paper comes into four conclusions.Firstly, in nowadays, the core regions of global R&D expenditure has turned into America, East Asia(represented by Chinese Mainland, Japan and Korea), Western Europe(represented by Germany, France and England)which are America, Japan and Western Europe(represented by Germany, France and England)in the late 90's.Secondly, the spatial pattern of global R&D expenditure develops uniformly with a multicenter trend.Thirdly, although the R&D intensity in developing countries has been elevated, it is weaker than developed economies.
